Acer, Asustek rank second, sixth globally in 2Q10 notebook shipments

Acer shipped 8.1 million notebooks in the second quarter globally, the second largest next to Hewlett-Packard (HP) with 8.51 million units, while Asustek Computer ranked sixth with 3.93 million units, industry sources have cited IDC statistics as indicating.
However, among the global top-10 brands, only Lenovo and Apple managed to maintain sequential shipment growth in the second quarter.
The number-one HP had a sequential shipment drop of 10.9%, with Acer, at the number two, 5.8%. Dell, the number three, had a sequential drop of 3.3% and shipped 5.52 million notebooks.
Lenovo, at fourth, shipped 4.84 million notebooks with a sequential increase of 18.6%. Toshiba was ranked fifth with shipments of 4.48 million units. Both Toshiba and Asustek only had a slight shipment drop sequentially.
Apple benefited from shipments of its new MacBook, which features Intel Core i processors, and ranked number seven with shipments of 2.45 million units, a sequential growth of 37.6%.
Samsung Electronics benefited from by strong netbook shipments, shipping 219.3 million notebooks, but the company still saw a sequential drop of 1% and ranked number eight.
Sony shipped 1.71 million notebooks with a sequential drop of 11.2% and ranked ninth globally, while Fujitsu, ranked tenth, having shipped 676,000 units with sequential drop of 32.1%.
