LG Electronics may ship only 28 million LCD TVs in 2010 due to short supply of TV panels and components, down from its internal shipment goal 30 million units, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
LG said at the beginning of the year that it aims to ship a total of 29 million flat-panel TVs in 2010, including 25 million LCD TVs, which is five million units lower than its internal target for the LCD segment, the sources said, adding the company aims to ship six million LED-backlit models.
LG shipped six million LCD TVs in the first quarter of 2010 to rank as the second largest LCD TV vendor worldwide. But LED-backlit models only accounted for about 5% of the company''s LCD TV shipments amid shortages of LED chips, the sources said.
LED supply will be a key factor affecting the chances of LG achieving its shipment goal for the year, the sources said. LG''s LED TV shipments will have to reach a quarterly average of almost two million units from the second to the fourth quarter in order to attain the goal of the year, the sources said.
But LG is making efforts to strengthen its components supply chain and its sales in the end market will remain strong, the sources said, adding that the Korean vendor is expected to ship 35-40 million LCD TVs in 2011.
LG shipped about 16 million LCD TVs in 2009.
