China handset design houses ship over 200 million handsets in 2009, say sources

China-based handset-design companies shipped a total of more than 200 million handsets in 2009, an increase of over 30% from 2008, due in part to strengthened cooperation with branded handset vendors and telecom carriers, according to industry sources.
The ranking of handset-design companies in China fluctuated dramatically in 2009, with the Wingtech and Longcheer groups taking up the top-two titles for shipments of 23 million and 22 million handsets, respectively, the sources noted.
The top-10 handset design houses also included Shenzhen Eidolon Communications Technology, Shanghai Huaqin Telecom Technology, CK Telecom and Kong Profit Technology.
Some other design houses which were previously in the top-10 rankings, such as SIM Technology, TechFaith Wireless Technology and UniScope Technologies (Shanghai), were expelled from the top-10 list in 2009, the sources added.
